A Quick Introduction of 5 User Experience Elements in Singapore

Jesse James Garrett defined User Experience as the way the product comes into contact with the outside world and developed five planes of user experience elements. From the bottom up is the Strategy, Scope, Structure, Skeleton and Surface. The five planes structure defines principles a product needs to follow, and from conception to completion, from abstract to concrete, forming a good user experience.

Strategy

Strategy layer includes User Needs and Site Objectives. User needs are externally derived goals for the site; It is identified through user research, ethnic techno/psychographics, etc. Site objectives mean business, creative or other internally derived goals for the site.

Scope

user scope

Scope

Scope layer includes Functional Specifications and Contents Requirements. Functional specifications are feature set, detailed descriptions of functionality the site must include in order to meet user needs.

Structure

user structure

Structure

Structure layer includes Interaction Design and Information Architecture. Interaction design is the development of application flows to facilitate user tasks, defining how the user interacts with site functionality.

Skeleton

user skeleton

Skeleton

Skeleton layer includes Interface Design, Navigation Design and Information Design. Interface Design is as in traditional HCI: design of interface elements to facilitate user interaction with functionality. In the Tuftean sense, information design is designing the presentation of information to facilitate understanding.

Surface

Surface

The surface layer is Visual Design. It means graphic treatment of interface elements(the look in look and feel)

How UX elements work together?

The five elements are in a bottom to up, from abstract to concrete. In working, you execute it step to step, start with strategy, and end with surface layer. Only you do strategy layer right, can you do right with the following layers. In Strategy layer, you need to make decisions that will affect the next layers. In Scope layer, you make a feature list. In structure layer, you divide functional hierarchy. In Skeleton layer, you need to arrange the features in pages based on a clear flow. Finally, in the last layer, Surface layer, you do visual design, make the interfaces more fancy and emotional. Once you finish the five elements of your project, a product effect is generated and can be presented.
