Difference between UI and UX in Singapore
This is a commonplace topic. My friends are always talking about this topic. I remember about two years ago, a friend of mine, a UI designer, told me he changed his title to a UX designer. He said, “Most of my work is to create a better experience for the product.” The term UX was very popular then. Simple to understand is: UX represents the experience, UI represents the interface.
At that time, I did not know what the difference between UX and UI was. I think they are the same, I began to read, through studying, my interest in this field is also growing.
The picture above, “User Experience VS Design,” illustrates the difference between UX and design.
User Experience(UX)
UX is both a “User Experience.” He needs a broader and larger study than the UI. UI is mainly a collection of interface frameworks and messaging.
UX begins with a deep understanding of the user base, creates “user roles” based on user research, and then designs solutions for current tasks.
UX builds an information architecture by gathering information and building powerful data mining to help with prototype work, selecting the best prototyping strategy, completing a quick and simple prototyping at the lowest cost, and investigating the collection of feedback.
UX designers do not usually think carefully about the UI, however, they work with visual designers or UI designers to visualize the user experience.
This is my impression of when UX was not yet in-depth understanding.
After learning more, I tried to list the skill methods in UX:
User Research (User Portrait)
Information Structure Planning
Interactive Design
UI design
Visual design
Prototype
Development
Experience and content
Service Design and Implementation
UX is a larger area, he includes development and UI design.
“Most business models focus on one’s own interests rather than the user experience, and these are the problems I solve.” -Tim Cook
User Interface(UI)
UI means “User Interface“, is the real interface design in the project. These are the pixels that are shown on the screen.
UI design feels more interesting to me because you’re designing cool stuff.
UI designer, is responsible for the web page or App in the interface display. This includes visual effects, such as whether the Tab is blue or gray, angled or flat. He also includes building page layouts, such as placing login buttons based on their importance.
In general, UI designers use AI, PS, Sketch, or pen to finish the design.
I started to believe that it would be impractical to become a qualified UI designer for methods that did not master UX. Researching user behavior and behavior is a good way for a UI designer to understand the goals and determine the success of the project, so at least some research is needed before starting the UI.
The UI designer’s understanding is that it is responsible for the interface planning and needs to arrange and execute a project’s interface. This may include any combination of the following skills:
User research
All critical paths
Wireframe and template
Design based on wireframe and stencil concept
Usability testing
Service design
Front design
“The location of visual elements in the UI has a huge impact on how users interpret information.” -Rick Oppedisan
Why UI and UX design are often confused
“Experience” is not as obvious as “interface”. UX designers try to figure out what processes can be used to create a better experience. UX designers define the experience of different users. Basically, the UI design is part of the UX creation experience.
A UI designer may or may not be a good UX designer, a UX designer may or may not be a good UI designer. A UX designer may or may not have both.
Why do most UX designers do not consider themselves UI designers?
There may be many UX designers applying methods that can not be reflected in the UI designer’s scope of work. For example, collect customer feedback, create a data-driven design, or create user portraits or user stories.
UX is about how to enhance the experience, which is their focus.
UX Add good methodological processes to enhance the experience. It requires the understanding of behavior and the human brain. And use good communication and ability to organize needs to convey the best experience. UI is just a part of UX.
“Design is not simply a matter of assembling, sorting, or editing. It adds value and meaning, brightens, simplifies, purifies, corrects, and makes noble, dramatic, persuasive, and even entertaining”- Paul Rand
The user interface can be designed.
User experience can be measured.
A good designer should be both.
